Join staff from Hanging Rock State Park and the Hemlock Restoration Initiative to help protect the hemlocks in multiple locations in the park. On our work days, we treat hemlocks with insecticide to protect them from hemlock woolly adelgid. Every volunteer will be paired with an experienced, licensed professional who will provide instruction and guidance. Both days will begin at 9:30 AM and will continue through the afternoon with an anticipated end time between 3:00 and 5:00 PM. Arriving on time is required; however, leaving early may be possible.
On Tuesday, March 25, we’ll be treating hemlocks along the eastern half of the Moore’s Wall Loop trail. Please note, this trail is considered steep and strenuous. We will be using CoreTect tablets which are placed in the soil at the base of the tree. Volunteers will need to carry their own water, food and other personal supplies, as well as some group gear.
On Wednesday, March 26, we’ll be treating hemlocks in the Moore’s Springs bike trails section of the park. This day will not be as strenuous because there is less hiking and less elevation change, but volunteers will still be working off-trail on uneven terrain, and will need to cross a narrow, shallow creek to get to the project area. The hike in should take 20-30 minutes. At this site, we will be using a liquid formulation of pesticide instead of the CoreTect tablets. Volunteers will still need to carry their own water, food and other personal supplies into the site, as well as some group gear.
