Join the Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) in Hemlock Treatment Volunteer Workdays in DSRF! Upcoming dates include:

  • Wednesday, 4/2, and Thursday, 4/3 in the Bridal Veil Falls, Shelter Rock, and Conservation Road areas (9am – 5pm)
  • Tuesday, 4/15 at High Falls (9am – 5pm)

Eastern and Carolina hemlocks are beautiful evergreens native to our area that are realizing significant damage from hemlock woolly adelgid, an aphid-like insect that feeds on starches from the trees.  Learn more about the species, the insect, and the effective treatment method by joining us for a chemical treatment day!

Please note, volunteers will be working with insecticide and moving through the forest off trail in potentially challenging terrain for the duration of the day. Each volunteer will be paired with an experienced, licensed professional who will provide instruction and guidance every step of the way.

Read more about this kind of work day here.

Volunteers may sign up for any or all of these workdays. We need the most help on Wednesday, April 2nd and Thursday, April 3rd! More details about where to meet and what to bring will be provided after registration.

For questions or to register, please email Ayla Busch at volunteer@savehemlocksnc.org or call 828-252-4783 with your name, phone number, email, and emergency contact information. Register by 4pm the evening before your desired workday for April 2nd and 3rd dates, and by 4pm on Friday, April 11th for the April 15th workday. Please include which days you’d like to attend.

Note: Our thoughts are with all of those impacted by the ongoing wildfires. We are aware of fires nearby our working area and are in contact with NC Forest Service staff about the issue. We will contact registrants as soon as we are made aware of any impacts to our workdays.
