Come out on Thursday, September 5th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for an Open House at the Mountain Research Station (MRS) in Waynesville highlighting hemlock work in North Carolina to combat the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA).

The day will feature the work of HRI partner, the Forest Restoration Alliance (FRA), including a tour of their hemlock breeding facilities at MRS.  This is a great opportunity to learn more about FRA’s efforts to breed HWA-resistant hemlocks and to meet the researchers doing this important work.

HRI will also be present with an informational display about our work along with other hemlock projects taking place in North Carolina.  Other subjects will include the challenges North Carolina faces with other invasive exotic pests, the hemlock nursery work of the NC Forest Service, the gene conservation work of Camcore, saving hemlocks in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, and hemlock silvicultural research of the US Forest Service. Work on American chestnut restoration by The American Chestnut Foundation will also be displayed.

The Mountain Research Station is located at 265 Test Farm Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.  For more information about the Forest Restoration Alliance, please visit their website: threatenedforests.com
