Join the Hemlock Restoration Initiative at the North Carolina Arboretum on Wednesday, November 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. to learn the fundamentals of treating hemlock trees to protect them from the invasive insect, hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). Today hemlock management is simpler and less expensive than ever before!
We will use the trees on the Arboretum grounds to learn and practice a variety of methods to treat hemlocks available to all landowners in North Carolina. We will cover the details of chemical treatment, including how to identify hemlock trees; assess tree health and infestation severity; and select, mix, and safely apply products. Participants will not only be learning but will also be helping protect some of the Arboretum’s hemlocks from HWA for years to come. A link 1.5 hour recorded presentation will be emailed to you upon registration. This material will support and supplement the in-person instruction and participants are expected to watch the presentation beforehand.
Participants will need to walk off-trail on uneven terrain and will be handling pesticides. Chemical resistant gloves and other equipment will be provided. In order to protect staff and participants, face masks and spatial distancing between participants are required. Participants should bring a bag lunch and will need to wear long sleeves and long pants.
Space is limited to eight participants. Register on the NC Arboretum website by November 17. The program is free for NC Arboretum members and $20 for non-members.
The Hemlock Restoration Initiative is restarting our educational programs and volunteer events. Despite the lifting of restrictions, we acknowledge the risk that COVID-19 continues to pose to members of our community. To maintain the safety of our event participants and staff, HRI is limiting the number of participants at all events and requiring that all individuals follow HRI’s COVID-19 safety guidelines. This means that sign-ups will be held on a first-come-first-served basis. Anyone not following the guidelines on the day of the event will be asked to leave. Please review the COVID-19 safety guidelines to ensure that you are comfortable following these guidelines. Please also let us know as soon as possible if you are unable to attend an event for which you are registered so that we may allow someone else to fill your spot.
