HWA is a tiny insect (roughly the size of the period at the end of this sentence), and it can be difficult to see with the naked eye. It is most visible during the winter and briefly during the late spring, when it has its signature waxy wool coat, resembling white, woolly puff balls at the base of each hemlock needle.
